Latest research shows just how important blood flow to muscles is in muscle growth so the old idea of a pump low weight high rep set after your heavy strengths sets might be a good idea.

Freeweights need more control. When using them you become far more aware of what is happening to your muscles at any time. With a machine, you litterally become a machine and react accordingly.

That's exactly it. Freeweights training gets more muscle fibres involved when lifting. You need to hold your posture as you perform reps otherwise you can hurt yourself. I agree that machines are safer but they don't give you the results of freeweights.

"Machines force you into awkward and un-natural positions which can lead to injury."

if that's the case why does everyone injure themselves with freeweights ? i would argue machines are safer and most are designed so that you only move in a natural way. they may however not be the best in terms of stimulating overall muscle growth.
